apparently, according to a friend of mine, chara/kyara uses “watashi,” as in “watashi wa chara.” i’m not familiar with japanese but according to wikipedia and my friend, watashi is (or can be):

  • very formal
  • gender neutral

so that fits their dialogue in that speech well!

NGL I got kinda into the anti kink mindset a year or so back, so I do understand how easy it is to get into these things. You see something you don’t like and then someone else validates you for not liking that and here’s a whole bunch of buzzwords on why they’re the worst people ever. It’s pretty easy especially when you think you’re based in the write because in my mind the kinksters were crosstagging so they deserved to be called out. This is probably what gets a lot of young antis into this, so I get it. Y’all need to realize though exposing yourselves to something that grosses you out isn’t going to do anything. Flag a post if it’s crosstagged out into something it shouldn’t be. Block blogs that produce content you don’t like. You’re in charge of what you see online, so take some initiative instead of complaining.

Thanks for speaking about this.

I feel like there’s also a lot of need to talk about the way broken Tumblr infrastructure has been a major cause of this toxicity.

For several years it used to be that tags were discrete from each other and post contents did not dump the post into the tag.

So for example if you had a character named Wolfsword Weedbutt, there would be different search results for #wolfsword, #wolfsword weedbutt, and any other variants; and if you tagged a post #wolfsword wrapped in clingfilm (for example) it would not go into the main tags for that character.

Another way to keep things out of the main tag, in that time frame, was to put the tag after the first five on the post, so that you could tag a post: #/ #// #/// #//// #///// #wolfsword weedbutt, and have it organized into the Wolfsword Weedbutt tag on your blog without attracting anyone else’s attention.

Now site tags are broken and replaced with a standard search engine. So now even if someone tags their post #clingfilm, and only *mentions* the character in the main post, it still appears in the main tag.

And all of this happened, I recall, a little over a year ago. I don’t remember the exact date; only that discourse changed from a regular-ass garbage fire to a damn oil spill around then.

This change, like most of the changes on this ill-run mess of a website, was introduced by Tumblr without rolling out an explanation to users; so it’s easy to encounter people who still don’t know about it. This includes both the people who post about something and don’t expect their posts to wind up in the main tags, and the people who run across said posts and assume it’s happening on purpose.

Anti discourse really got way worse after tumblr changed the search engine

REPORT, STAT!!!

Things I need to know from the Japanese localization:

  • What does Sans call Papyrus?
  • How does Undyne refer to herself?
  • How does Papyrus refer to himself?
  • Mettaton?
  • Chara?
  • Flowey? Asriel The Absolute God of Hyperdeath?
  • Is there anything else that’s cute or fun that I need to know?

OKAY so I got tagged on a post from @ursik-l-in-junk-mind  that answered my question about how Papyrus refers to himself.

He uses oresama, which I think the TVTropes Useful Notes page for Japanese pronouns defines pretty well:

俺様 “My magnificent self,” perhaps, or “my most serene highness.” Attaching an honorific that indicates great respect to the most macho of first-person pronouns makes it a highly emphatic, arrogant and presumptuous version of ore. Used either tongue-in-cheek, or by the smuggest of men.

HOWEVER… when he’s at home/with Sans (I’m so curious about the exact contexts you have no idea) he switches to…. boku. Which is casual and non-threatening and I love that he pretty much explicitly drops the I THE GREAT PAPYRUS thing so much.

He does drop the self-aggrandizing in English too but it isn’t really as obvious and I love that its more obvious here and you guys I REALLY WISH I DIDN’T DROP THOSE JAPANESE LESSONS MIDDLE SCHOOL ME MADE A HUGE MISTAKE

NICE

flowey uses ‘boku’, and even when he’s omega flowey and calls himself a god, he drops the ’-sama’ from the proper term for god ‘kami-sama’
he’ll also occasionally mispronounce things and refers to frisk (when saying ‘you’) as ‘kimi’, even after dropping the facade of being nice

@amighost Did you see this?

I stumbled over @undyne-appreciation holding a Undyne Appreciation Week between 3rd and 8th July and this is the perfect excuse to draw more Undyne. There is never enough Undyne.

Obviously the prompt for Day One is: SMOL FISH BABBY!!
With a tol tooth gap. And old Gerson thoroughly enjoying his ambitious young fan.

In case someone seeing this in time wants to participate too, here are the prompts and the rules 🙂

i’m still not over the locket and i never will be

toby could have picked a million things to represent the game for the collector’s edition. the delta rune, flowey’s face, the red heart that’s the game’s icon, even something relating to a well-known character like sans or papyrus

instead, as the symbol of the game, as what he considers representing the game’s themes and message and imagery, is the locket representing the relationship between asriel and chara. the two most important characters in the game

everyone knows how important asriel is in this game. but if that doesn’t say everything about the importance that chara has too, about how deep their relationship with asriel was, about how chara is not evil or insincere but a tragic figure who loved their adopted family and their best friend and was loved by them equally back, about who it is that ultimately saves asriel in the end and saves the monsters with it? what does?

and then, for good measure, toby makes the locket a music box that plays memory. just to remind you that one of the game’s most important leitmotifs is not about asriel himself, but specifically about this locket. specifically, it’s about asriel and chara, and the importance asriel’s memory of chara has to the whole story of undertale

Where can I buy this

it comes with the undertale collector’s edition you can get on fangamer!
