Papyrus: GRILLBY’S… IT’S DARK AND FULL OF GREASE. PURGATORY OF FRIES… HAMBURGER ABYSS… ANYWAY, MY BROTHER PRACTICALLY LIVES HERE.
Very poetic and evocative Paps.
and
Papyrus: I’M NOT COMING TO GRILLBY’S.
Just to clarify the poetic language from before, straight to the point there.
With Undyne:
Papyrus: GRILLBY’S? WE’RE TOO REFINED FOR THAT GREASEHOLE.
Undyne: WOAH, if you go, you HAVE to try the cheese fries. They’re AMAZINGLY bad for you!! Oh, sorry, Papyrus, were you saying something?
Papyrus: JUST MONOLOGUING ABOUT MY LOVE FOR GREASE!!!
and
Papyrus: OUR FEELINGS FOR GREASE RUN DEEP LIKE A RIVER
sure paps.
The reason for this inconsistent statement is pretty self-evident in the phone call with Undyne. Papyrus starts saying what he wants to say and then does a complete turn around when he realises it conflicts with what Undyne thinks.
As for Papyrus’ dislike of Grillby’s? it’s easy to say it’s because he doesn’t like grease, since that’s what he claims after all. But there are these quotes from one of the bar patrons:
“full of strong bones” I love that statement. Not “builds strong bones” or “is good for bones” but like, the milk is made of bones. What an odd thing to say Paps. I love you.
But back on topic! So it sounds like Papyrus uses grease as something of an excuse due to his dislike of Sans spending time at the bar, but when he gets there it doesn’t seem like he minds ordering a drink and staying, for a while at least. That may just be him making an excuse to keep an eye on Sans though, despite his own feelings.
But what are those feelings?
Somehow a dislike of grease doesn’t seem like a good enough reason that he would avoid Grillby’s like the plague outside of when Sans it there.
Particularly because….
Grillby’s seems to be the social hub of Snowdin, with all of Papyrus’ coworkers (and his brother) spending their time off shift there, yet Papyrus still seems entirely unwilling to be there unless it’s for Sans’ sake.
This does work in with what I mentioned in my previous ramble about Papyrus’ desperation for friends, yet the way he seems to intentionally avoid being close to people.
Everyone around town knows of him, even if they think he’s weird, but unlike Sans, who seems to be friends with everyone, Papyrus – while actually liked enough by everyone, to the point where his death alone affects more in the story than the deaths of countless other monsters, doesn’t seem very good at, or almost unwilling, to actually be close to people regardless of his claims.
Despite it being very clear that almost everyone likes him or wouldn’t mind being friends with him if he actually spoke to them more, he seems to think his only friends are his brother and his boss. both positions being ones where friendship came secondary, as an added bonus, to either family or career.
But still even from those two, his closest relationships, he seems evasive and unwilling to disclose much personally.
As shown just above, Papyrus, despite Undyne being one of the closest people to him, isn’t even willing to tell her he disagrees with her about something as trivial as food preference. But hey, it isn’t like Undyne isn’t keeping an even bigger secret from Papyrus, one that she believes is for his own protection.
Undyne wants to spare Papyrus from emotional pain by refusing to tell him she won’t let him join the guard, which she doesn’t want to do because she wants to protect him from physical pain. Papyrus seems to instil a need to protect him in people, but the level of over-protection does seem to be the cause of more problems than solutions.
Sure in Genocide/Murder runs he it seems like Undyne’s feelings are correct when you rip Papyrus into little smiling pieces, but I do feel like Papyrus was denied Critical Need To Know Information. Both by Undyne and Sans.
(Oooh boy…. All three of them need to be more honest with each other really tbh).
But hey, Papyrus knows Undyne well enough to manipulate her into being our friend. And it works so well that his savvy must be acknowledged. Papyrus is more shrewd than he lets on.
And then we have the third of Papyrus’ relationships, his third friend…
Flowey
A flower is talking to my brother? Someone must be using an echo flower to mess with him.
Strange that this seems to be something that Papyrus seemed openly okay to mention to Sans and others, and stranger still that Sans seems so quick to dismiss what his brother said. And stranger yet stranger is the friendship of Flowey and Papyrus.
How much does Papyrus know about Flowey?
What has Flowey told Papyrus about himself?
What has Papyrus confided in Flowey that he hasn’t confided in Sans or Undyne?
What is the reason why, out of all the monsters in the Underground, after countless resets, Papyrus is Flowey’s favourite?
What does Flowey see in Papyrus that makes him so special to him?
Why did Papyrus decide to make a Flowey fanclub?
How much of their friendship is pure manipulation on Flowey’s part?
And how much isn’t?
How much of their friendship is (or has been, given the nature of resets) Papyrus being aware of what sort of monster Flowey is, but doing what he does to try and push Flowey towards a better path? The way he does for the human on the genocide run.
How much of Flowey’s manipulations to reach the Souls was Papyrus actually aware of?
He goes along with Flowey in telling Frisk to head to the lab to see Alphys after all, what did Flowey say to convince him?
Papyrus doesn’t seem to find the idea of leaving the Underground realistic, yet his friendship with Flowey is the reason everything falls together in the end, and is why we reach the True Ending.
The relationship between these two has so many unanswered questions, and it’s something I’m very interested in.
