(1/2) Canon Gaster: former royal scientist; highly praised by his followers but seemingly forgotten by everyone else, possibly due to time shenanigans. Canon Sans: strongly implied to have an interest and expertise in science, but his work seems to have been abandoned. Canon Alphys: current royal scientist, said to work faster than Gaster by his own followers and implied to be on par with him, casually invents new tech, conducts unprecedented experiments which set the plot into motion.

(2/2) Fanon Gaster: The greatest scientist who ever lived. Fanon Sans: The 2nd greatest scientist who ever lived. Fanon Alphys: “idk Undyne’s girlfriend? Who cares.” You have no idea how much this pisses me off.

YEAH PRETTY MUCH.

it annoys me to no end that alphys is brushed to the side in order to glorify sans and gaster. we don’t have any evidence that gaster had anything to do with the determination experiments, meanwhile alphys literally named determination and studied it’s properties.

it was her. she was the one who figured out that this substance was the reason human souls persisted and monster souls did not, she was the one who referred to this as the will to keep living, the resolve to change fate.

im really sick of people minimizing her accomplishments

PLUS she built Mettaton’s body for him. I’m not even entirely sure what she did there, but Mettaton’s soul in his EX body is right-side up, which implies she messed around with a monster’s soul successfully and… I wonder, is that the reason that the soul can leave the body temporarily to shoot at you? (While it’s not confirmed that the heart is Mettaton’s soul… it seems pretty likely? The NEO form wasn’t worked on as much, as far as I remember, and that still has an upside-down heart.)

I think I ended up rambling there, but the point is, she did something pretty amazing with Mettaton, too, although it’s not entirely clear what.

(also taking this out of the tags because I want it to be seen: I remember reading one post that said that the only reason(s?) Alphys messed up with the Determination is that it wasn’t her area of expertise, (given she can upgrade your phone with all those things in five seconds flat, I figure that kind of thing is what she’s best at) she wasn’t supervised, and no one had done this before ever so she had no idea what she was supposed to be doing.

Then when she did mess up, the only thing she did wrong was keep it a secret forever because she was scared of what would happen if she told the truth. And Toriel fired her instantly the moment she did, so her fear was justified. But she took care of the Amalgamates, when she could easily have abandoned them, and when they get back to their families they’re happy, and not dead, and also Alphys created Flowey which in the end, caused the barrier to be broken so there. I think pretty much everything said here comes from other peoples’ posts, but these are important things that should be repeated.)

…..aaaand that was more rambling. Anyways, Alphys is important.

exactly! she’s brilliant with machines. i think maybe one thing that was an issue for her is, while she’s very very good with machinery (as you said, mettaton’s body and the cell phone are amazing feats, as well as the fact that she built the DT extractor by herself), the way she went about the determination experiments was not scientific at all. excellent engineer, not so much of a determination research scientist. they are pretty different fields, and despite what media often portrays, nowadays it’s pretty unfeasible for anyone to specialize in more than one discipline, and certainly not all of them.

she shouldn’t have kept them a secret, this is something she did wrong, but at the same time it doesn’t make anything she did right null and void.
